Literature Text

Oh Stars,
Once before did you sing,
On the day you were born
From the song of your king.

Oh Stars sing again,
Oh Stars, sing of tears.
Sing of guiltless death,
And all dark'ning despair.

Lift up your voice,
And stars, as you sing,
Look down through the night
Upon your young queens.

The night is so dark,
And their grief is so deep.
Hark as they're singing--
Watch as they weep.

"Beloved king, arise,
Open up your eyes!
Let us feel your golden flanks
Heave with golden sighs.
You who scattered winter
As the dawn doth scatter night,
Please, oh please, beloved king,
Arise, arise, arise!"

Oh trees,
So long have you slumbered,
So long have you slept,
As silent as winter,
As silent as death.

Trees so newly revived,
Trees so newly awoken,
Grieve now for your king
Who lies cold and broken.

Doff your gay raiments
So freshly donned--
Like tears drop your leaves
Upon the green lawn.

The queens rock his head
And stroke his great face,
And wet with their tears he
Who died in their place.

"Beloved king, arise,
Open up your eyes!
Let us feel your golden flanks
Heave with golden sighs.
You who scattered winter
As the dawn doth scatter night,
Please, oh please, beloved king,
Arise, arise, arise..."
Few things I've read affected me as deeply as the scene of Aslan's death in The Lion, the Witch, And the Wardrobe. I hoped in this song to mix a little bit of Susan and Lucy's personal sorrow with the sorrow I felt that all of Narnia must have experienced.
