Literature Text

With curl of lip he bids her stay;
With flash of fang he warns her 'way.
There's nothing left to do or say,
A beast is just a beast.

With throaty growl she's welcomed in,
Then repulsed time and time again.
A creature born of rage and sin,
A beast, is just a beast.

Like a raging tiger's is his roar,
Like a lion's the shake of his mane.
He once was a man, but a man he's no more,
And a man he'll never be again.

And yet,
Even beasts must get lonely,
Even black hearts must break...
Do tigers cry
When they get cold at night?
Is that why you rattle your cage?

Lovely she is of face and form,
Her hands are cold, her body's warm.
Her heart is broke, her life is torn--
A beast is just a beast.

He dares to long for what's not his;
For those unlovely love's forbid.
Her heart's saved for a handsome prince,
And a beast is just a beast.

And yet,
Even beasts must get lonely,
Even black hearts must break...
Do tigers cry
When they get cold at night?
Is that why you rattle your cage?
This little song is about the story of beauty and the beast--whatever its incarnation. [link] While I imagine most people will fit it in their heads to the Disney movie--or at least one of the written fairy tales, which is a little closer to my intentions--but oddly enough, it was none of these that sparked this song. Rather, the refrain is part of another song that I wrote a LONG time ago which was inspired by a B&B story of my own creation, which had an altogether human "Beast."

I got older and realized that the rest of the song was crud, but I liked the refrain, so I created the rest of this around it. I don't think it's really done yet.

That was beautiful! Beauty and the Beast is my favorite story and the part about tigers rattling in their cages was just perfect. I love this!
